The photo is of the New London Community Christmas Tree that used to be placed on the square. It was a custom for many years. The picture was taken in 1919 by Ivan S. Triplett, a local insurance agent, who also took photos for Mr M.E. Graves, the local photographer. Mr Triplett also held down the second shift at Hiles Tower for the New York Central Railroad so he was a very busy man. The tree was usually sponsored by the local Exchange Club which also collected toys and gifts to pass out to the children every year. This was before my time so I cannot tell you whether the tree was ever lighted or not. I doubt if it was back in those days. The view is looking North down North Main St. towards the railroad tracks. We wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and hope you all have a very happy Christmas Day! |
